Okonomyaki - Japanese Pancakes

Preparation Time: 10 minutes

Cooking Time: 30 minutes

Makes: 4 Serves

Ingredients you will need:

  • 350 gm shredded cabbage
  • 2 spring onions, sliced thinly
  • 170 gm self-raising flour
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 chicken stock cube or, 1 tsp chicken stock powder
  • 1/2 cup water
  • Vegetable oil

  • Sauce
  • 5 tbsp tomato ketchup
  • 2 tbsp soy sauce
  • 2 tbsp Worcestershire sauce

  • Kewpie Mayonaise

How to make this recipe:

  1. In a large bowl, beat eggs and water together, then add self-raising flour and crumbled stock cube or powder. Mix well, to remove any lumps. Combine cabbage and spring onions with the batter and mix well, so that all cabbage is coated with batter.
  2. Place a non-stick frying pan over medium heat, along with about 1/2 tbsp. vegetable oil. Allow to heat up and then place 1/2 - 3/4 cup of mixture into the pan (I can usually fit 2 side by side). Cover and allow to cook for 5 minutes, flip and allow to cook for a further 5 minutes. Remove from pan, place on a plate and cover with foil. Repeat with remaining mixture.
  3. Once all mixture has been used, serve topped with kewpie and okonomiyaki sauce (as much as desired).
