Toad in a hole

You may be thinking, what on earth is a toad in a hole? Thats a very bizarre name for a dish. Well, yes, it is. I know what the dish is made with and I still think to myself, it sounds like it should be made with toads...yeah, I'd never go for that. No, Thank you.

If you're not familiar with Toad in a Hole, then you may be more familiar with Yorkshire Pudding. It's a pastry made with a pancake like batter that the English serve with roast dinners and use to mop up all the delicious gravy from their dinner plates. Toad in a hole is a variant of this, whereby sausages (the 'toads') are cooked in the Yorkshire Pudding batter. Making it a complete meal.

The wonderful thing about Toad in the Hole is that it's CHEAP to make, it's satisfying to eat and it only takes around 30 minutes to make. Most of that is taken up with waiting for it to be cooked in the oven. I found this recipe in the Good Housekeeping family favourites cookbook, so I thought I'd give it a try and iit was delicious (just dont repeat my mistake, use a wide baking dish like the one in the second half of the video, instead of a short and deep one).

Makes:2 serves
Total Time: 30 minutes
Total Cost: $4.28 ($2.14 per serve)

To make this recipe you will need:

  • 125 gm All purpose flour, sifted ($0.10)
  • 2 large Eggs ($0.60)
  • 150ml Milk ($0.13)
  • 2 tbsp vegetable oil ($0.13)
  • 4 Sausages (preferably pork) ($3.40)
  • Salt and Pepper, to Taste ($0.05)

If I was to make this recipe again, i'd use a bigger baking dish. The one I used was too big and the batter stayed too thick and took much longer to cook through than guided. So it was a little stoggy in the centre. The outside crust on the other hand was incredible. It was light and golden and crispy and tasted really good.
