Sweet Ice Tea Recipe

I have somewhat of an obsession with Sweet Ice Tea. When Matt and I visited the United States two years ago, it's possible that I drank my body weight in Sweet Ice Tea. Back at home, unless it's a special occasion, I refuse to spend money on drinks like coke, pepsi, ice tea. It's too expensive per litre and water is of course much healthier for you.

Recently I stumbled accross this recipe and thought that I'd try it. To my surprise, it tastes exactly like the Sweet Ice Tea that you buy at the store. You can also add flavourings if you want, like lemon slices for Lemon Ice Tea

For the make at home cost  of $0.68 for 3 litres and the 20 minute time investment to make (most of which is waiting for the tea to steep), I can't imagine that I'll be buying sweet ice tea from the supermarket anytime soon.

Makes: 3 Litres
Time: 20 minutes
Total Cost: $0.68

You will need:

  • 6 Teabags ($0.24)
  • 1/8 teaspoon Bicarb Soda ($0.01)
  • 2 cups of White Granulated Sugar ($0.43)
  • 10 cups of Water ($0.00)

Start by placing the teabags and bicarb soda into a large jug (one that will fit 12 cups of liquid). Pour over 2 cups of boiling water, cover and allow to steep for 15 minutes.

After 15 minutes, remove the teabags (don't squeeze them). Pour in the 2 cups of water and stir until the sugar has dissolved.

Once the sugar has dissolved, pour in 8 cups of cold water and refrigerate until chilled.

Enjoy!
