It doesn't have to cost a lot to have a a satisfying and delicious meal. It also doesn't have to take a lot of time!

I batch made this bolognese sauce and froze it, so that I could whip it out in a flash during the week and serve up a wholesome meal in minutes! I can serve it with pasta, baked potatos or rice.

It's delicious, simple and really budget friendly!

Makes: 6 serves
Time: 50 minutes

Total Cost: $6.06

For this recipe you will need:

  • 1 Tbsp. Vegetable oil or Olive oil ($0.10)
  • 1 Large Onion, Chopped ($0.44)
  • 1 Large Carrot, Chopped ($0.37)
  • 1 Large Garlic Clove, Minced ($0.15)
  • 1 Bay Leaf ($0.05)
  • Handful of Chopped Parsley ($0.50)
  • 250gms Minced Beef ($2.00)
  • 1 small can of chopped mushrooms ($0.85)
  • 700ml bottle Tomato Passata ($1.60)

Start by heating your oil over medium high heat. Add the onion, carrot, garlic, bay leaf and parsley, allowing to cook until the carrot and onion are translucent and cooked through. Stir occasionally, making sure not to allow the vegetables to burn.

Add the minced beef and allow to brown. Stirring occassionally. Add to this the mushrooms and passata (add some water to your jar and shake, to get all the sauce off the sides and add this to the pan also).

Stir and bring to the boil, reducing heat to low and allowing to simmer for 45 minutes to an hour.

Serve with your favourite pasta or allow to cool and freeze for later use.

Enjoy!
